A Letter from Jenny Cotton About Applying for Next Year's Housing

As we prepare to open the application process for housing for the 2023-24 academic year, I wanted to share a few details to make sure your student has the best opportunity to secure housing that meets their needs for the upcoming year.

Housing and Residence Life is acutely aware of how important it is to both you and your student that they have a home away from home, and that in light of Georgia Tech's enrollment growth in recent years, some of you are concerned about housing availability. Though the incoming first-year class will be larger in the coming year, there will still be housing available for current undergraduate and graduate students for the next academic year.

We are in conversation about increasing our capacity for the future, but I want to make sure families know about the resources available to help their students find housing more immediately.

In recognition of our growing first-year classes and the data that tells us that students in their early years of undergraduate education benefit the most from on-campus housing, we will open the housing application in the same phased manner as last year:

January 31 at noon: rising second-year residents only

February 13 at noon: + all current residents

February 20 at noon: + all students

If your student would like to live on-campus next year, they need to be ready to apply as soon as the application window opens to them to give them the best chance of securing their spot. It’s important to note that completing the application process secures a space in line for room selection, but the order of room selection is determined by the number of Georgia Tech credit hours a student has completed.

We will turn on the waitlist when we reach capacity but know that if your student applies after this point and joins the waitlist, there will be more support available. They will be able to look up their place in line, and they won't pay a penalty for canceling while on the waitlist.

Because we cannot guarantee housing to students, we host an off-campus housing fair each semester that allows students to meet with property managers with available leases near campus. We encourage you to visit our website with your student to explore some of the available options and discuss whether your student is ready for off-campus life.

We will continue to communicate with residents throughout the process to alert them ahead of the time the application opens to them and provide guidance on the steps required to complete the application. Make sure your student is checking their Georgia Tech email and their text messages for that information, and that they attended or watch the recording of our information session. If you have any questions about the process yourself, you can reach out to the Housing Help Desk team by submitting an inquiry or calling 404-894-2470.

On behalf of myself and my entire Housing and Residence Life team, I want to thank you for your engagement in supporting your students' continued success and invite you to reach out for more information as needed.

Sincerely,

Jenny Cotton
